Vol 1, No. 12 - November

What a fabulous weekend

Ive heard so many great reports about the marvellous time everyone had at the Jazz and Wine festival and the weather was spot on to. I hear alot of events were sell outs, and it just so happens thats what has happenned to us, the marquee had booked out before we had the bookings for the boat, just great!! And no one is more dissapointed than me, Ive been warming up my vocal cords and reading the Kenny Everitt joke book in preparation, but alas all in vain.

But not all is lost....

We have organized another brilliant winery tour for you, our loyal members.

A Slower Boat to Trentham

Heres your chance to indulge in an afternoon of cruising, slurping and munching with a winery tour thrown in for good measure!
On Sunday 21st Nov we will be taking a luxury 40 passenger converted houseboat on a leisurely punt to the award winning Trentham Estate Winery high on the banks of the Murray. We will be taken on a tour by winemaker Anthony Murphy and taste some of his excellent wines, one of which is his 03 Viognier that just took two trophies and a gold at the Inland Wine Show, plus other beauties from their cellars.
Once plied with good tidings from(by now) our good friends at Trentham, we will make an even more leisurely passage back to the town with nibbles, a few glasses of bubbles and other such beverages, and if your really lucky I might be handed a microphone!
So if your not put off by that last bit, tickets will cost $25ph and are available from us at the Mildura Liquor Dept, you can use cash or card.

Departing from the Rowing Club lawn at 12.30pm and arriving back at about 6pmish, it’s an afternoon you shouldn’t miss.
Grab a group of like minded friends and Book now It’s a guaranteed good time!

Sherry

Sherry, the classic octogenarians drink. Or so we think!
Try chilled sherry on a hot summer afternoon with some Tapas, which should change the way we all think about this complex, versatile but slowly disappearing wine. And the fact that soon we will not be able to call it sherry due the European Unions regulations. They stipulate that the terms used to describe fortified wine products can no longer be used outside the country of origin. So say goodbye to Sherry, Port, Oloroso, Amontillado and Fino as of January 1st 2008.
And get used to Australian Fortified White Wine instead of Sherry and Vermouth and Australian Fortified Red Wine instead of Port, Tokay and Muscat. Port styles will carry Australian Tawny or Vintage and wood aged or blended on their labels. With Sherry styles Dry will replace Fino, Mature Medium Dry will replace Amontillado and Mature Medium Sweet will replace Oloroso.

I’m not going to try to tell you how Sherry is made, as its one of the most complex of any fortified wines. But I do want your input for some good sherry recipes, how do you like to drink it or mix it. The most creative or interesting entry will win a bottle of wine!
Just email your ideas to winetime@fishers.com.au . Good luck

An interesting bit of information came my way today at work I thought Id share with you. Have you noticed that the walking man logo on the front of Johnnie Walker Whisky products has been reversed to give the impression of forward motion? The marketing boffins in their back room have come to the conclusion that more sales will result from the public seeing the figure walking one way instead of the other. Subliminal marketing at its best.

Drunk

Zilzie Buloke Reserve 2002 Sangiovese

WOW what a wine, I can see why the Penguin Wine Guide gave this little number its top value wine under $15.
This is my sort of wine. Its got the lot, sweet berries, cassis, toasty oak, depth, balance, length and that little point of difference that the Sangiovese fruit imparts. It would go perfectly with rare fillet steak and onion jam or some good vintage cheese and crackers.
Just imagine a Mercedes Benz with AC/DC’s “You shook me all night long” on the CD, Yep its like that, a classy, exotic red, that rocks!
On our shelves @ $ 10.95, sensational value

Food

Lately I’ve been having a love affair with pitta bread with just about anything in or on it.
My favorite is to brush both sides of the Greek style pitta with olive oil and to throw it on the BBQ plate till both sides are browned, do a few at a time.
Have prepared a platter of dips (Tzdziki and Hommus are always starters), oven roasted tomatoes, smoked salmon, some cold shaved meat, the deli has got some at the moment, and your choice of salad gear. You can roll it up yiros style or just rip into the warm breads and top with your own selection of goodies.
Bound to be quite messy so don’t wear the taffeta or tails and have a lot of serviettes on hand ‘cause you’ll need them!
Now grab a bottle of Rose off our shelf, we have a good selection with most budgets covered, and sit under the glory vine with friends sharing this brilliant low stress feast. That’s what I call entertaining.
