Vol 1, No. 26 - March 2005!
Easter Weekend...What a great weekend, so much on in and around Mildura and perfect weather to top it all off. I rode to Apex park on Sunday afternoon and couldn’t believe the almost standing room only beach and the amount of water craft zooming up and down towing skiers, knee boarders and just about anything that floats. I’ve never seen it so busy. This, along with other events that I checked out over the weekend, made me glad to live in such a wonderful place that is so alive and dynamic. Two things that really reaffirmed themselves to me over the weekend; Firstly, roll on the full dominance of screw caps for wine. Being a good husband and having dinner prepared for my wife, I put her favourite Chardonnay in the fridge so when she got home from work I would have a cold glass to slip into her hand. Well, you guessed it, corked!! And to make matters worse I had nothing else in the fridge to compensate (that’s probably a lesson in itself, always have at least two bottles in the fridge!) Damnation, my smooth plans for the evening foiled by a dirty bit of Spanish bark. Secondly, I’ve always sprouted about my exceptional skills at Lamb roast (modest little cupcake aren’t I) and I guess my arrogance was my undoing. As I have said in a previous newsletter, leg of lamb needs a long slow roast to gelatinise all the sinews that are in the leg thus making it tender. You can’t throw a leg into the oven, reef the temp up to high and expect a succulent roast in two hours!! As yours truly managed to do! Remember, long and slow when it comes to roasting a leg. I’m sure there’s a Confucius saying regarding this lesson, Ill get back to you when I think of it! The other night I was knocking back a couple of cans of Grolsch and watching Xanadu, yes, you read that right, Xanadu! With the absolutely beautiful Olivia Newton John starring alongside Gene Kelly and the brilliant music of the Electric Light Orchestra, yes that’s the one, with acting more wooden than Pinocchio and cheesier than a cheese platter in France! Well, besides the aforementioned downside I highly recommend this experience to anyone who likes a really good retro movie and a flash back to the early eighties (plus Olivia looks mighty good in that off the shoulder roller skating number). Grolsch is a beautiful beer at any time but in this instance its lovely crisp bitterness is useful to wash away the sugar coated corn of the screenplay! And the fact it now comes in a 500ml can just extends the drinking pleasure longer, for example Xanadu is a four pack of Grolsch kinda movie. Experience this duo soon!
