Vol 1, No. 30 - April 2005!

Winetime's turned 30!!!

Hip hooray, Winetime’s turned 30! Quite a milestone for a guy who types with two fingers and suffers constant writers block.

It’s really a blast when we meet the wine club members who drop in the shop and say that they’ve cooked one of my recipes, or are in to pick up a wine that I’ve reviewed.

I am currently working on a calendar of events for the wine club and just let me say, I’ve got some good fun planned for the coming year.

Brewery Tour

First cab off the rank will be a tour of the Mildura Brewery and of course tasting of their wares. If you’re like me and want to see how beer is made from scratch, then this is a great opportunity to get behind the scenes and see how’s its done. We will be touring the brewery on the10th May at 7pm and will cost you nothing. Just let me know if you will be coming and I’ll see you there.

Voyager to Mildura

Then on Sunday 19th June we will be boarding the River Queen Voyager for a long leisurely cruise to Mildara for a BBQ and tastings of their extensive range.

Those of you who were lucky enough to get on the slow boat to Trentham last year will know what a good time we had and probably won’t want to miss this trip. I’ll be donning the Chefs hat to cook lunch so I can promise no tough chops and rissoles!

Get a group together and book now tickets will be $35ph all inclusive.

Bookings can be made via email, phone (50189403) or personally.

Payment can be cash or card and have to be paid by 10th June.

Quaff Awards

Well known wine writer and TV presenter Max Allen has released his new book, “Quaff The Best 300 Wines in Australia for under $15”.

We have in store a few of his best picks.

Banrock The Reserve Sparkling Shiraz

- picked up The Ultimate Australian wine under $15 award and sparkling wine of the year!

Hardys 2003 OOMOO Shiraz

- got the gong for Red wine of the year!

Banrock Pinot Chardonnay - best sparkling wine under $10!

Food

Make-do Pizza

Saturday night and as usual I’m thinking of a great dish I can prepare for my hungry family, then write about for you guys in Winetime.

But this Saturday I’ve got a couple of factors working against me, firstly the fridge is unusually bare and secondly the hot water system decided to empty itself throughout the house on Thursday night leaving us with a huge cleanup on Saturday.

So come five o’clock Sat arvo I’m still none the wiser as what to cook, looking back into the bare fridge there’s some bits and pieces, Pitta bread, leftover tomato based pasta sauce, ham, some roast chicken, grated cheese and pesto sauce amongst other bits and pieces of leftovers and such. By now I guess your thinking what I was thinking ….grab a glass of crisp white and settle down with Kath to watch “What Not to Wear” with the always opinionated Trinny and Susannah, what a kak!

Then, oven on to 250, grease a large tray and place the pitta breads on with a good smear of the old pasta sauce right to the edges. Next is the cheese then I broke up the ham, chook (any meat really) dobbed around the pesto, hey, you can put just about anything on a pizza! Just don’t overdo the topping or the pizza will become sloppy.

In the oven for ten minutes or so and its done.

If your into making your own dough and want the real Pizza effect then get an unglazed terracotta tile and put that in your oven, let it really preheat (250 plus) before throwing the pizza straight on to the tile. Then stick a wooden spoon in the door to let the steam out whilst the pizza cooks; this my friends, will bring you close to pizza heaven!

We drank a rather spectacular bottle Wolf Blass Gold Label Chardonnay with our dinner (I think the wine may have been a bit to good for makedo pizza, but hey, I was scrounging through the cupboards and we had to drink what was available!)

Don’t forget our terrific cleanskin range at $7.50 they represent great value and now we have a Coonawarra Cab Sav cleanskin as well, to compliment the Chardonnay, Sav Blanc, Shiraz and Merlot.
